An unusual iron complex with formally zero
oxidation state, iron bis(6,6΄-dimethyl-2,2΄-bipyridine), was synthesized
and its crystal structure was determined. Combination of experimental and
theoretical studies reveals that the electronic structure of the complex is
best described as Fe(II)(Mebipy-)2 with anionic Mebipy- ligands and high-spin Fe(II) center.
